The Allied Health Education and Training Governance Guidelines: Clinician focussed element

Learning and development planning, responsibility and evaluation is essential to embedding new skills and knowledge into practice.

For the Individual

What does this include?

Responsibility for own education and training is taken

  • Actively seeks out opportunities to engage in education and training of both a formal and informal nature
  • An accurate record of education and training is maintained
  • Seeks information about engaging in and facilitating workplace learning
  • Actively engages in seeking out opportunities in the workplace to work with and learn from colleagues
  • Actively participates in departmental/team/service education activities
  • New learning is implemented into practice

A learning and development plan has been completed and reflects identified gaps in knowledge and skills required

  • Reflects on current areas of clinical practice and identifies skill and knowledge gap areas for improvement to incorporate into the learning and development plan

The learning and development plan is in line with position description and requirements

  • Reviews position description in preparation for key activities e.g. formulating a learning and development plan and participating in the annual performance appraisal review

Allocated time (with a goal of 20-40 hours per year) is prioritised for education and training activities within core clinical and non-clinical responsibilities

  • Complies with standards as required by AHPRA and/or professional association

Education and training is evaluated to determine effectiveness and impact

  • Data is collected and analysed

Learning and development plans are incorporated into the local performance appraisal system.

  • Learning and development plans are discussed as part of the performance appraisal review process

Evidence-based practice is implemented at a system/service level

  • Clinical indicators are in place and reflect evidence-based practice
